STOP HIV AND AIDS
o Today, around the world, there are nearly 40 million people living with HIV or AIDS.
o Last year over 5 million people were infected with HIV.
o More than 50% of them were between 15-24 years of age
o Women are more susceptible to HIV than men.
Once someone is infected with HIV they are infected for life, but HIV can be PREVENTED!
While most of us have heard of HIV and AIDS, there are many who are still unaware of the basic facts related to HIV and how it can be transmitted.
HIV (the Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a preventable disease that attacks the body's immune system. Over time HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome) which cannot be cured. As the disease progresses, people can die from a range of infections due to their weakened immune system. Medication can only slow down the progression of the disease but cannot cure it.
HIV is a slow acting virus therefore a majority of infected people look healthy and feel well for years after the infection. Some don't even know they have a virus while they can spread HIV irrespective of their knowledge.
HIV is spread via:
o Unprotected sex (intercourse without a condom)
o Transfusions of unscreened blood, contaminated needles, and
o Infected women can pass it onto their child during pregnancy, childbirth, and/or breastfeeding.
Raising awareness of how HIV is transmitted is one of the best ways we can prevent the epidemic and potentially save millions of lives.
By informing the youth and helping them with changing attitudes and overcoming ignorance more people will be able to stay safe.
Advices for Youth:
o Do not engage in unprotected sex (without condom).
o Discuss protection with your partner before you have sex.
o If you think you may be at risk of contracting HIV, visit a sex clinic near you where all your information is kept confidential.
Just by reading these lines, you have taken the first steps towards safety. It is important to spread this information to friends and family since education and protection are the best prevention.
Canadians for Children at Health Risk are assisting and joining the international struggle against HIV infection in children and youth through raising awareness about prevention. We also believe that by spreading the word, more young people would know how to prevent HIV infection and more of them would stay safe.

June 2009
CCHR Mission in the developing regions of the Balkans: Stop HIV and AIDS
Presntation by: Zolen Georgievska
Place: Red Cross Macedonia and Red Cross Serbia
"Our current project is to assist International struggle against HIV infection in children and youth by raising awareness about prevention…"
Ms. Georgievska presented and offered to Red Cross Macedonia and Serbia, CCHR educational flyer translated to Serbian and Macedonian languages: "Stop HIV and AIDS".
Red Cross's medical professionals and staff in both countries gladly accepted the possible co-operation. They considered this topic very useful and valuable for youth as well as compatible with their on going methods of prevention. They very much depend on our financial help for printing flyers in local languages for youth events.
"CCHR is mostly hoping to get help from Macedonian and Serbian communities residing in Canada, through their donations or by buying an art work from CCHR on line gallery."
